About N.U.M.C.

Celebrating 117 Years... Needville United Methodist, Welcomes You!

The church began as a German speaking Methodist congregation and conducted services in German into the 1920's.  Some of the older members say that even into the 1980's there were those who would sing Christmas carols in German during the holidays.  Today we worship in a sanctuary that is seventy years old.  When you first enter this room, you are struck by the history.  The stained glass windows, the wooden pews all speak of a long line of the faithful stretching back several generations.

But with Jesus' call to make disciples, we cannot be content alone with honoring our heritage.  As a congregation we are always prayerfully looking for ways to reach out to the community and beyond with the message of Jesus Christ in both word and deed.  We honor the past, and we look forward with anticipation to the future.

There is an emphasis on young people in our ministries.  We recently opened a new building for youth and family activities.  Our youth gather not only for fellowship, fun, and recreation but also for Bible study and missions.  The youth provide Christmas gifts for needy families during the holidays and make frequent visits to the residents at the SPJST nursing home.  They lead part of the worship service on the fourth Sunday of the month.

The church also hosts seven Girl Scout troops that serve over sixty girls.  The Cadette/Senior girl scouts are going to do their Silver project by renovating a house that the church has recently purchased.  They will be designing to make the rooms of the house into meeting rooms.

The church participated in relief efforts for Hurricane Ike, taking up special offerings, putting together flood buckets, and sending teams to work in areas affected by the storm.  We sent a team of adults and youth to assist in the clean up of Central United Methodist Church in Galveston.  A group of Methodist Men went to work at the First UMC in Winnie.

The congregation participates in the activities of the Needville Ministerial Alliance which sponsors a food pantry and provides Christmas baskets during the holidays.  The church also participates in providing meals for the senior citizens, cooking for their Friday meetings once a month.  The United Methodist Women provide birthday cakes for the residents of the SPJST nursing home.

As we look toward the future, we plan to participate in an addiction ministry that will focus on community and family needs.  Addiction is a spiritual issue as well as a medical and cultural issue.  The church will be a resource for education, encouraging young people to make appropriate choices.  It will also help refer those who need assistance with addiction to professionals, agencies, and community organizations.
